Question: What happens to Christians when we die?
Answer: We are spiritual beings just like our Father (John 4:24, Genesis 1:27) and just like every other thing He created, they will live forever (angels, even fallen angels). When our fallen body (flesh) dies our spirit will live (Christians will not taste death or experience God’s wrath Matthew 26:39). When I was younger, I asked God this very question, “what will death be like” His reply, “I want you to blink…It will be that fast and you will be with me.” This lines up with scripture (2 Corinthians 5:8, Philippians 1:21). For Christians, death has no sting (because we know we will live past the time our earthly body expires). We can see in Philippians 1:21–26 the apostle Paul had to make a decision to go home with his Lord or continue to stay here and help; he really considered death -going to heaven- to be a good thing and so should we. As Christians we should not fear death and that is the God given truth (1 Corinthians 15:53–57).
John 4:24 (NKJV): 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Genesis 1:27 (NKJV): 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him
1 Thessalonians 5:9–11 (NKJV): 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
2 Corinthians 5:8 (NKJV): 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
Philippians 1:21–26 (NKJV): 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.
1 Corinthians 15:53–57 (NKJV): 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
