From Beggar to Heir (notes)

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

  • Everyone who was healed in scripture sought out Jesus-they came to Him. According to Hebrews 11:6 they had a measure of faith. Both beggar and heir called Jesus, Lord. This implies they followed or would listen to Him.
  • The man who was an officer, he knew how  God’s kingdom worked, “But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. ” However, notice that Jesus did want to come to his house, yet the centurion thought he was unworthy! He did not fully know God’s will either!
  • The man in authority was not sick (he knew God’s will), but his servant was sick? Compare this with the beggar who was full of leprosy.

Heirs (Romans 12:1–2, Romans 8:16–17 , Isaiah 56:5,Galatians 3:29–4:7, 1 John 3:1–3)

Matthew 8:5–13 (NKJV)5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” 7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.

  • Beggar

“Leave No Man Behind”

From beggar to heir, God wants us saved and healed.

We do not want to shoot for the gutter, we want to know God’s will!

Luke 5:12–16 (NKJV)12 And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He charged him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded.” 15 However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.

  • Beggar, servant  or slave:  someone who does not know God’s will.  God wants us to be a servant after we know who we are in Christ; after we know His will. Jesus’ example, He knew the Father’s will, He loved the Father, and He loved others.

John 15:14–17 (NKJV)14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

Galatians 4:1–7 (NKJV)1 Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, 2 but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father. 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. 4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

  • God will work with us and reveal His will to us no matter what level we are at–if we are humble enough to receive.

2 Peter 3:9 (NKJV)9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

John 8:7–8 (NKJV)7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

God’s will, lift us up

James 4:10 (KJV)10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Ephesians 2:6–7 (NKJV): 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

John 5:19–21 (NKJV)19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
